A client came in yesterday with an ailment called multiple sclerosis. This is a disabling neurological disease condition that affects the brain and spinal cord.
Though he was wheelchair bound and had little control of his hands and legs, he was able to drive by himself to my place and park his car and come into my lobby area. I then came down to assist him. Amazingly, he was able to climb up 3 flights of stairs to come into my home office for his HijamaEnergetics session. I was impressed at his determination.
To understand what happens in multiple sclerosis, it’s useful to understand how the central nervous system works. Your brain and spinal cord make up your central nervous system. Your spinal cord connects nearly all parts of your body to your brain. Messages go between your brain and spinal cord, travelling along the nerves. These signals control how parts of your body move or work. They let you feel things like pain, touch and so on. The nerve fibres in the central nervous system are covered and protected by a substance called myelin. Myelin is the fatty tissue that surrounds and protects nerve fibers. In people with MS, there is damage to the myelin and it is stripped off the nerve fibres, either slightly or completely, leaving scars known as lesions or plaques. When the nerves are damaged in this way, they can’t send messages properly to and from the brain. The messages can slow down, become distorted, or not get through at all. Sclerosis means scarring and refers to the scars that MS causes in the brain or spinal cord. It’s called multiple sclerosis because the lesions happen in more than one place. As well as losing the myelin, there can sometimes be damage to the actual nerve fibres too. It’s this nerve damage that causes the increase in disability that can occur over time. Symptoms of MS include fatigue. This feeling of being exhausted isn’t like normal tiredness. It can make doing things (even thinking) very hard or impossible. You may get numbness or tingling in your arms, legs, hands or feet. Eye problems, your sight might become blurred or you may see double. For a while you might not see through one or both eyes. Feeling dizzy and having problems with your balance. Problems walking. Problems with talking or swallowing. Muscle stiffness and spasms (sudden movements you can’t control). Your bladder or bowels not working properly. Shaking in your arms or legs . Forgetting things and difficulties with your thinking. Sexual problems. Emotional issues. Feeling depressed or crying a lot can be a normal reaction to being told you have MS.
